Why Popcorn Costs so Much at the Movies or Unlimited Power

Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies: And Other Pricing Puzzles

Author: Richard B McKenzi

Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies, And Other Pricing Puzzles unravels the pricing mysteries we encounter every day.

Have you ever wondered why all movies, whether blockbusters or duds, have the same ticket prices?
Why sometimes there are free lunches?
Why so many prices end with "9"?
Why ink cartridges can cost as much as printers?
Why merchants offer sales, coupons, and rebates?
Why long lines are good for shoppers?
Why men earn more than women, around the globe - and why they always will?

Richard McKenzie goes on to show how the 9/11 terrorists still kill Americans every day, because their attack distorted the perceived risks and relative prices of air vs. automobile travel, and jacked up both security costs and flight delays. Professor McKenzie also explores the unintended consequences of well-meaning efforts to spur the use of environmentally friendly fuels: starvation among millions of people around the world, and the destruction of rainforests in Malaysia and Indonesia.

How can these things be? If you think you know the answers, think again. Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies, And Other Pricing Puzzles shows you that the real reasons are sophisticated and surprising - and in Professor McKenzie's hands, both informative and entertaining.

You won't need a degree in economics to enjoy this fascinating book, just an armchair and an inquiring mind.

Unlimited Power: The New Science of Personal Achievement

Author: Anthony Robbins

IT'S NOT ABOUT POWER OVER OTHER PEOPLE. IT'S ABOUT POWER OVER YOURSELF!

Robbins, the undisputed master of the magic of mind power shows you in this audio program how to harness yours. He demonstrates—passionately and eloquently—that whatever you think will be, that your state of mind determines what you can and can't do, and that all successful results can be modeled and duplicated. His enthusiasm is contagious as he shows you how to:

  • Reprogram your mind in minutes to eliminate fears and phobias
  • Fuel your body with spectacular health and energy
  • Dramatically improve your interpersonal relationships
  • Become a persuasive communicator and create instant rapport with anyone you meet
  • Use the success of others to remodel yourself
  • Discover the five keys to wealth and happiness
  • Master the ultimate success formula

Robbins calls Unlimited Power the new science of personal achievement. You'll call it the best thing that ever happened to you.

Publishers Weekly

This is a comprehensive and intelligent success achievement program for setting and following through with personal and professional goals by the California behaviorist who popularized the method of "neurolinguistic programming'' (NLP), or control of mind over body, culminating in his trainees' barefoot jaunt over hot coals. Essential to Robbins's "Ultimate Success Formula'' are clarity of desired goals, energy, passion, persistence of action, effective communication skills and altruistic motives. His is a success prescription based on realistic and sophisticated ideology, best suited for those who have already "got what it takes'' and simply have yet to make it happen. (July 31)

Library Journal

Robbins argues that by using a new technique called neurolinguistic programming (NLP) anyone can become successful at almost anything. NLP teaches us how to communicate success to ourselves. One of the best ways to do this is to model ourselves on people who are successful: Think, act, and speak like a success and you are on the way to being one. Despite much helpful material (even regarding nutrition), this book scarcely acknowledges the limitations that exist in people's lives. Of course, the whole thrust of NLP is to learn to focus on one's power and not on one's limits. But the text is too wordyit reads like a transcript of a series of talksand it also needs more structure and organization. Though it strives to be upbeat and encouraging, Unlimited Power still leaves mixed feelings. John Moryl, Yeshiva Univ. Lib., New York

Been reading that-- that book you told me about. You know, The Art of War by Sun Tzu. I mean here's this guy, a Chinese general, wrote this thing 2400 years ago, and most of it still applies today! Balk the enemy's power. Force him to reveal himself. You know most of the guys that I know, they read Prince Machiabelli, and I had Carmela go and get the Cliff Notes once and -- he's okay. But this book is much better about strategy.

Globalization and Its Discontents or Leadership Without Easy Answers

Globalization and Its Discontents

Author: Joseph E Stiglitz

This powerful, unsettling book gives us a rare glimpse behind the closed doors of global financial institutions by the winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics. Renowned academic economist Joseph E. Stiglitz served seven years in Washington, as chairman of President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers and as chief economist at the World Bank. In this book, Stiglitz recounts his experiences in such places as Ethiopia, Thailand, and Russia. He finds repeatedly that the International Monetary Fund puts the interests of its "largest shareholder," the United States, above those of the poorer nations it was designed to serve. This insider's account of global economic policy will be hailed for its courage and honesty. Those seeking to understand why globalization has engendered the hostility of protesters in Seattle and Genoa will find the reasons here. While this book includes no simple formula on how to make globalization work, Stiglitz provides a reform agenda that will provoke debate for years to come.

Author Biography: Nobel Prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz is professor of economics at Columbia University.

George Soros

A fascinating [and]... profound critique of global financial systems. Eminently readable. I could hardly put it down.

Juan Somavia

Whatever your opinions, you will be engaged by Stiglitz's sharp insights. A must read.

Nicholas Stern

He is one of the most important economists of modern times.

James K. Galbraith

This book is everyone's guide to the misgovernment of globalization. Stiglitz explains it here in plain and compelling language.

Publishers Weekly

Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize winner and Columbia University economics professor, sees globalization's unrealized potential to eradicate poverty and promote economic growth. In recent years, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization have promoted world financial stability, prosperity and free trade, yet Stiglitz wonders why so many revile these organizations' programs to the point of rioting in the streets. Casting a dispassionately analytical eye at East Asia's and Russia's financial turmoil, he argues that the IMF imposed austere policies that only exacerbated each area's problems. When he finds a similar policy pattern for other countries in crisis, Stiglitz asks how a public institution can ignore growing evidence of a flawed policy and not take action or be held accountable. In answering his own question, Stiglitz blames the "market fundamentalism" that endorses the view that a "free" market solves all problems flawlessly. As Stiglitz authoritatively indicates, one-size-fits-all economic policies can damage rather than help countries with unique financial, governmental and social institutions. He calls for public institutions to reform and become more transparent and responsive to their constituents. Stiglitz shares inside information from cabinet meetings when he served on Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers and from his years as chief economist at the World Bank, divulging debates in Washington's conference rooms, naming names and raising his eyebrows at those who refuse to question certain IMF policies' repeated shortcomings. This smart, provocative study contributes significantly to the ongoing globalization debate and provides a model of analytical rigor concerning the process of assisting countries facing the challenges of economic development and transformation. (June 10) Forecast: Stiglitz's impassioned, balanced and informed book is a must-read for all interested in understanding globalization. Professors, economists and students should respond to his author tour and national media interviews, making this a strong business seller. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

An insider's account of the ill-considered effort to make a free market of the Third World, an effort that, described here, favors the rich and robs the poor. The title's echo of Sigmund Freud is shrewd, if a little misleading, for whereas Freud's great Civilization and Its Discontents was an encompassing look at the neurosis-making qualities of Western life, Stiglitz's confines itself to the workings of but two policy-making and -effecting organizations, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. This he does very well. Intimately acquainted with their work-he served as an economic advisor to the Clinton administration and as the World Bank's chief economist and senior vice president-Stiglitz charges that both organizations have abandoned their original missions. "The IMF was supposed to limit itself to matters of macro-economics in dealing with a country . . . and the World Bank was supposed to be in charge of structural issues," he writes, but, with the advent of the free-market-worshipping Reagan administration, both took an activist, even imperial view that demanded that developing countries throw open their doors to capitalism. The results were often disastrous as wealth and resources flowed out of such countries and into the hands of the First World, Stiglitz writes, particularly in the case of newly democratic Russia, which, he notes sadly, "must treat what has happened as pillage of national assets, a theft for which the nation can never be recompensed." Stiglitz's prescriptions for the establishment of a truly global but more equitable economy are unabashedly Keynesian and generally convincing. They include slowing the pace of capitalist expansion until developingcountries can adjust politically and socially to new financial systems, giving more and better aid to those countries, forgiving debt-and thoroughly overhauling the World Bank, IMF, and other instruments of development. Provocative, readable, and sure to earn Stiglitz persona non grata status in certain corridors of power.

Leadership Without Easy Answers

Author: Ronald A Heifetz

The economy uncertain, education in decline, cities under siege, crime and poverty spiraling upward, international relations roiling: we look to leaders for solutions, and when they don't deliver, we simply add their failure to our list of woes. In doing do, we do them and ourselves a grave disservice. We are indeed facing an unprecedented crisis of leadership, Ronald Heifetz avows, but it stems as much from our demands and expectations as from any leader's inability to meet them. His book gets at both of these problems, offering a practical approach to leadership for those who lead as well as those who look to them for answers. Fitting the theory and practice of leadership to our extraordinary times, the book promotes a new social contract, a revitalization of our civic life just when we most need it.

Drawing on a dozen years of research among managers, officers, and politicians in the public realm and the private sector, among the nonprofits, and in teaching, Heifetz presents clear, concrete prescriptions for anyone who needs to take the lead in almost any situation, under almost any organizational conditions, no matter who is in charge, His strategy applies not only to people at the top but also to those who must lead without authority—activists as well as presidents, managers as well as workers on the front line.

Library Journal

Heifetz (Kennedy Sch. of Government, Harvard Univ.) presents a new theory of leadership for both public and private leaders in tackling complex contemporary problems. Central to his theory is the distinction between routine technical problems, which can be solved through expertise, and adaptive problems, such as crime, poverty, and educational reform, which require innovative approaches, including consideration of values. Four major strategies of leadership are identified: to approach problems as adaptive challenges by diagnosing the situation in light of the values involved and avoiding authoritative solutions, to regulate the level of stress caused by confronting issues, to focus on relevant issues, and to shift responsibility for problems from the leader to all the primary stakeholders. The theory is applied to an analysis of historical accounts of local, national, and international events. An innovative and thoroughgoing work; highly recommmended for graduate and undergraduate collections.-Jane M. Kathman, Coll. of St. Benedict Lib., St. Joseph, Minn.

Heifetz (Harvard U.) offers a practical approach to leadership for those who lead as well as those who look to them for answers, drawing on research among managers, offices, and politicians in the public and private sectors. No More Mondays or Fashion Design

No More Mondays: Fire Yourself - And Other Revolutionary Ways to Discover Your True Calling at Work

Author: Dan Miller

Is Your Job Making You “Stupid”?

Adam Smith, author of The Wealth of Nations, once wrote that a person who spends his life performing the same repetitive tasks “generally becomes as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human creature to become.” Wow! Now that’s not a pretty picture. Unfortunately, much of our work today consists of those boring, repetitive tasks.

But maybe you’re one of the many who have gotten caught up in thinking work is just something you do to support your weekends. Work is that necessary evil, a means to an end, or just a curse from God. You probably take your role of providing for yourself and those depending on you seriously. But you don’t expect to enjoy your work—you just do what has to be done.

Only now you’re seeing that even loyalty and dependability bring no guarantees. Lately you’ve seen coworkers who have been let go after years of faithful service. Perhaps your entire industryhas been shaken by outsourcing or changing technology. Maybe you’re tired of the long commute and being tied to your desk when you know you could make your own hours and still be productive. You may have ideas stirring that you think could create new income and time freedom.

But here comes another Monday. Maybe feeling trapped is just the reality of the way things are. Doesn’t everyone dread Mondays? Doesn’t every responsible person just bury their dreams and passions in exchange for getting a paycheck?

Absolutely not! All of us, no matter how old we are or what kind of work we’re doing, can learn to bring the sameexcitement to our jobs that we bring to whatever we love to do on our days off. I believe that each one of us can pursue work that is a reflection of our best selves—a true fulfillment of our callings.

No More Mondays
will show you that meaningful work really is within your grasp. And once you’ve opened the door and seen all the exciting career opportunities that await you—whether you decide to revolutionize your current job or launch a new career altogether—you’ll find you can’t go back to the old way of working.”

From No More Mondays

For everyone who dreads going to work on Monday mornings, inspiring advice on how to find fulfilling work in an uncertain age.

Do you hate Mondays?

If so, what's keeping you at your current job?

If you said a steady paycheck and the promise of a secure retirement, then you're in for a big disappointment. In today's volatile economy, there is nothing safe about punching the clock for a job you hate.

As beloved talk-show host and bestselling author Dan Miller reveals, the only way to find true security is by following your calling and then finding or creating work that matches that calling and passion.

No More Mondays’s practical, inspirational advice speaks to people looking for guidance on how to launch a new career or business, those who want to stay in their current jobs and give the old 9-to-5 model a twenty-first-century makeover, and managers desperate to understand the way people want to work today. For all of them, Dan Miller's message is loud and clear: If you're one of those people who dread going to work on Mondays, do something about it!

The Works or Critical Chain

The Works: Anatomy of a City

Author: Kate Ascher

How much do you really know about the systems that keep a city alive? The Works: Anatomy of a City contains everything you ever wanted to know about what makes New York City run. When you flick on your light switch the light goes on--how? When you put out your garbage, where does it go? When you flush your toilet, what happens to the waste? How does water get from a reservoir in the mountains to your city faucet? How do flowers get to your corner store from Holland, or bananas get there from Ecuador? Who is operating the traffic lights all over the city? And what in the world is that steam coming out from underneath the potholes on the street? Across the city lies a series of extraordinarily complex and interconnected systems. Often invisible, and wholly taken for granted, these are the systems that make urban life possible.

The Works: Anatomy of a City offers a cross section of this hidden infrastructure, using beautiful, innovative graphic images combined with short, clear text explanations to answer all the questions about the way things work in a modern city. It describes the technologies that keep the city functioning, as well as the people who support them-the pilots that bring the ships in over the Narrows sandbar, the sandhogs who are currently digging the third water tunnel under Manhattan, the television engineer who scales the Empire State Building's antenna for routine maintenance, the electrical wizards who maintain the century-old system that delivers power to subways.

Did you know that the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is so long, and its towers are so high, that the builders had to take the curvature of the earth's surface into account when designing it? Did you know that the George Washington Bridge takes in approximately $1 million per day in tolls? Did you know that retired subway cars travel by barge to the mid-Atlantic, where they are dumped overboard to form natural reefs for fish? Or that if the telecom cables under New York were strung end to end, they would reach from the earth to the sun? While the book uses New York as its example, it has relevance well beyond that city's boundaries as the systems that make New York a functioning metropolis are similar to those that keep the bright lights burning in big cities everywhere.

The Works is for anyone who has ever stopped midcrosswalk, looked at the rapidly moving metropolis around them, and wondered, how does this all work?

The Prize or The Ultimate Question

The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money, and Power

Author: Daniel Yergin

Pulitzer Prize Winner -- and Now an Epic PBS Series

The Prize recounts the panoramic history of oil -- and the struggle for wealth power that has always surrounded oil. This struggle has shaken the world economy, dictated the outcome of wars, and transformed the destiny of men and nations. The Prize is as much a history of the twentieth century as of the oil industry itself. The canvas of this history is enormous -- from the drilling of the first well in Pennsylvania through two great world wars to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and Operation Desert Storm.

The cast extends from wildcatters and rogues to oil tycoons, and from Winston Churchill and Ibn Saud to George Bush and Saddam Hussein. The definitive work on the subject of oil and a major contribution to understanding our century, The Prize is a book of extraordinary breadth, riveting excitement -- and great importance.

Publishers Weekly

Yergin ( Shattered Peace ), a much-quoted energy consultant, here offers a timely, information-packed, authoritative history of the petroleum industry, tracing its ramifications, national and geopolitical, to the present day. Oil, ``the world's biggest and most pervasive business,'' he shows, has played a central role in most of the major wars and many of the critical international situations of the 20th century, has changed the lives of virtually everyone on the planet and is currently at the heart of the first post-Cold War crisis of the 1990s. Yergin describes how, after an oil glut replaced the panic at the pump of the early 1980s, ``Hydrocarbon Man'' once again took petroleum for granted--only to be shattered by Iraq's invasion of Kuwait this past August. Whatever the evolution of the international order, oil will remain the ultimate strategic prize, predicts the author in a book that will be widely discussed. He points out, however, that the environmental movement is gaining significant strength as more and more citizens of the world express a willingness to trade off energy production for environmental protection. Photos. Major ad/promo. (Jan.)

Library Journal

This book does not require recent events in the Persian Gulf to make it an essential addition for most public libraries as well as all college libraries. Written by one of the foremost U.S. authorities on energy, it is a major work in the field, replete with enough insight to satisfy the scholar and sufficient concern with the drama and colorful personalities in the history of oil to capture the interest of the general public. Though lengthy, the book never drags in developing its themes: the relationship of oil to the rise of modern capitalism; the intertwining relations between oil, politics, and international power; and the relationship between oil and society in what Yergin calls today's age of ``Hydrocarbon Man.'' Parts of the story have been told as authoritatively before, e.g., in Irvine Anderson's Aramco: The United States and Saudi Arabia ( LJ 7/81), but never in as comprehensive a fashion as here.-- Joseph R. Rudolph Jr., Towson State Univ., Md.

The Ultimate Question: Driving Good Profits and True Growth

Author: Fred Reichheld

One Question Can Determine Your Business's Future. Do You Know the Answer?

CEOs regularly announce ambitious growth targets, then fail to achieve them. The reason? Their growing addiction to bad profits. These corporate steroids boost short-term earnings but alienate customers. They undermine growth by creating legions of detractors—customers who complain loudly about the company and switch to competitors at the earliest opportunity.

Now loyalty expert Fred Reichheld shows how to reverse the equation, turning customers into promoters who generate good profits and true, sustainable growth. The key: one simple question—Would you recommend us to a friend?—that allows companies to track promoters and detractors and produces a clear measure of an organization's performance through its customers' eyes. In industry after industry, this "Net Promoter Score" is the single most reliable indicator of a company's ability to grow.

Based on extensive research, The Ultimate Question shows how companies can rigorously measure Net Promoter statistics, help managers improve them, and create communities of passionate advocates that stimulate innovation. Vivid stories from leading-edge organizations illustrate the ideas in practice.

Practical and compelling, this is the one book—and the one tool—no growth-minded leader can afford to miss.

The Washington Post

Among management books, this one's a keeper.

Publishers Weekly

Almost everyone appreciates the importance of customer satisfaction in business, but this book takes that idea to two extremes. First, it claims that customer satisfaction is more important than any business criterion except profits. Second, it argues that customer satisfaction is best measured by one simple question, "Would you recommend this business to a friend?" Pressure for financial performance tempts executives to seek "bad profits," that is, profits obtained at the expense of frustrating or disappointing customers. Such profits inflate short-term financial results, Reichheld writes, but kill longer-term growth. Only relentless focus on customer satisfaction can generate "good profits." One unambiguous question, with answers delivered promptly, can force organizational change, he claims. Reichheld makes a strong rhetorical case for his ideas, but is weaker on supporting evidence. The negative examples he gives are either well-known failures or generic entities like "monopolies," "cell phone service providers" and "cable companies." When presenting statistics on poor performers, the names are omitted "for obvious reasons." On the other hand, the positive examples are named, but described in unrealistically perfect terms. Believable comparisons of companies with both virtues and flaws would have been more instructive. (Mar.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

With real-life stories, a step-by-step plan, resource guides, and lists of scams to avoid, this is the book that will help readers finally make the leap--and show them that they don't have to give up their family, creativity, or peace of mind to earn a decent salary.

Yes!: 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive

Author: Noah J Goldstein

Small changes can make a big difference in your powers of persuasion

What one word can you start using today to increase your persuasiveness by more than fifty percent?

Which item of stationery can dramatically increase people's responses to your requests?

How can you win over your rivals by inconveniencing them?

Why does knowing that so many dentists are named Dennis improve your persuasive prowess?

Every day we face the challenge of persuading others to do what we want. But what makes people say yes to our requests? Persuasion is not only an art, it is also a science, and researchers who study it have uncovered a series of hidden rules for moving people in your direction. Based on more than sixty years of research into the psychology of persuasion, Yes! reveals fifty simple but remarkably effective strategies that will make you much more persuasive at work and in your personal life, too.

Cowritten by the world's most quoted expert on influence, Professor Robert Cialdini, Yes! presents dozens of surprising discoveries from the science of persuasion in short, enjoyable, and insightful chapters that you can apply immediately to become a more effective persuader. Why did a sign pointing out the problem of vandalism in the Petrified Forest National Park actually increase the theft of pieces of petrified wood? Why did sales of jam multiply tenfold when consumers were offered many fewer flavors? Why did people prefer a Mercedes immediately after giving reasons why they prefer a BMW? What simple message on cards left in hotel rooms greatly increased the number of people who behaved in environmentally friendly ways?

Often counterintuitive, the findings presented in Yes! will steer you away from common pitfalls while empowering you with little known but proven wisdom.

Whether you are in advertising, marketing, management, on sales, or just curious about how to be more influential in everyday life, Yes! shows how making small, scientifically proven changes to your approach can have a dramatic effect on your persuasive powers.

Publishers Weekly

Goldstein, Martin and Cialdini meld social psychology, pop culture and field research to demonstrate how the subtle addition, subtraction or substitution of a word, phrase, symbol or gesture can significantly influence consumer behavior. Interspersing references to Britney Spears, the Smurfs and Sex and the City with more academic concepts such as "loss aversion" and the "scarcity principle," the authors illustrate the simple and surprising approaches that can hone a company's marketing strategies. Witty chapters detail the allure of the yellow Post-it, the tip-garnering capabilities of an after-dinner mint, how highlighting a product's weaknesses can increase its appeal, the powerful role of third-party testimonials, how doctors can convince patients to adopt healthier choices by prominently displaying academic credentials in their offices, and how mirroring another person's gestures can elicit a more generous response by strengthening a perceived bond. While written primarily for a marketing audience, this amusing book has equal value and appeal for executives, salespeople-even parents trying to persuade their kids to do homework. (June)

Explicit Cost Dynamics or Serializing Fiction in the Victorian Press

Explicit Cost Dynamics: An Alternative to Activity-Based Costing

Author: Reginald Tomas Yu Le

GETTING TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOTTOM LINE

Traditional cost management systems typically defeat their own purpose by leading corporations to make decisions that ultimately do not optimize performance. These systems are the foundation for decisions that are made throughout the corporation. In order for organizations to increase performance beyond current capabilities, a new approach is needed that addresses issues such as understanding the true impact of various actions on the bottom line-and eliminating methods that distort numbers and narrow options. Explicit Cost Dynamics (ECD) offers such an alternative, and this expertly written, revolutionary book provides an indispensable introduction to the subject.

Informative and easy-to-read, Explicit Cost Dynamics:

• Provides an alternative view and understanding of the impact of costs, actions, and time on the bottom line of a corporation

• Explains how this new theory can lead to an overall profit maximization

• Shows that costs can be considered as either a function of activities performed, as a function of resources expended, or of time

• Shows that the difference between explicit dollars flowing into and out of a company is equal to the rate of change of cash

• . . . and much more to help CEOs, CFOs, controllers, cost managers, financial managers, and others involved in the decision-making process improve their organizations' overall bottom lines.

Serializing Fiction in the Victorian Press

Author: Graham Law

Drawing on extensive archival research in both Britain and the United States, Serializing Fiction in the Victorian Press represents the first comprehensive study of the publication of installment fiction in Victorian newspapers. Often overlooked, this phenomenon is shown to have exerted a crucial influence on the development of the fiction market in the last decades of the 19th century. A detailed description of the practice of syndication is followed by a wide-ranging discussion of its implications for readership, authorship, and fictional form.

Booknews

Law (English studies, Waseda U., Tokyo) shows how serial publication in syndicates of weekly news miscellanies throughout the British Empire was important in cultural and economic terms. A descriptive history of the rise and decline of the practice of syndication is followed by chapters that discuss its implications for readership, authorship, and the fictional form. Coverage includes well-known novelists, such as Thomas Hardy and Charles Dickens as well as "newspaper novelists" such as David Pae and Mary Elizabeth Braddon who published mostly through the weeklies. From the Ballfield to the Boardroom or The Political Economy of International Trade

From the Ballfield to the Boardroom: Management Lessons from Sports

Author: Brian Goff

No one can deny that sports and business are two of the most potent forces in our culture today. Sport, play, and the terms and phrases that define them, are engrained in our collective psyche, influencing the ways in which we conduct business-as a "game," with rules of engagement, tournaments of competition, the shame that accompanies defeat, and the bragging rights that accrue to the victor. From the Ballfield to the Boardroom draws from Brian Goff's expertise as a managerial economist to shed new light on the sports-business connection. Using dozens of examples from across the spectrum of professional and college sports, he analyzes the ways in which key decisions are made on the playing fields and locker rooms and applies these lessons to the corporate context. From the distinctive leadership styles of legendary coaches Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, John Wooden, and Bobby Knight, among others, to such culturally significant developments as the racial integration of Major League Baseball and the meteoric rise of NASCAR, Goff draws from the world of sports to provide a solid foundation in the managerial arts, including: assessing risk and uncertainty, conducting market and competitive analysis, wooing customers, fostering an innovative culture, managing information and communication flows, and resolving labor disputes. The result is an incisive look at the sport of business, with practical insights for successful management at all levels of your organization.

The Political Economy of International Trade: U. S. Trade Laws, Policy, and Social Cost

Author: Jae Wan Chung

American trade policy is a crucial subject not only to the United States, but also to foreign countries. Free trade has been a long-standing U.S. policy position. The United States has played the lead role in the international free trade framework and contributed to this framework through multilateral trade negotiations. As both trade and fiscal deficits steadily increased during the 1980s in the United States, free trade has not stood without its share of suffering. Chung investigates American trade policy from the perspectives of U.S. trade laws and international trade agreements by outlining the primary trade laws of the past, considering the trade laws of the present, and delving into various trade agreements, disputes, and reforms. Looking to the future, Chung offers a unique argument for the enforcement of trade remedy laws and the reform of the international trade framework. The Political Economy of International Trade is certain to be of interest to academics, policymakers, trade industry practitioners, and politicians in the United States as well as around the world.

The Cultures of Caregiving or The Global Resistance Reader

The Cultures of Caregiving: Conflict and Common Ground among Families, Health Professionals, and Policy Makers

Author: Carol Levin

As the population ages and the health care system focuses on cost-containment, family caregivers have become the frontline providers of most long-term and chronic care. Patient care at home falls mainly on untrained and unprepared family members, who struggle to adjust to the new roles, responsibilities, and expenses. Because the culture of family caregivers -- their values, priorities, and relationships to the patient -- often differs markedly from that of professionals, the result can be conflict and misunderstanding.

In The Cultures of Caregiving, Carol Levine and Thomas Murray bring together accomplished physicians, nurses, social workers, and policy experts to examine the differences and conflicts (and sometimes common ground) between family caregivers and health care professionals -- and to suggest ways to improve the situation. Topics addressed include family caregivers and the health care system; cultural diversity and family caregiving; the changing relationship between nurses, home care aides, and families; long-term health care policy; images of family caregivers in film; and the ethical dimensions of professional and family responsibilities. The Cultures of Caregiving provides needed answers in the contemporary crisis of family caregiving for a readership of professionals and students in medical ethics, health policy, and such fields as primary care, geriatrics, oncology, nursing, and social work.

From Family to Market or Latinos in a Changing US Economy

From Family to Market: Labor Allocation in Contemporary China

Author: Fei Ling Wang

This book analyzes Chinese history, politics, and economic development through the lens of labor allocation within the world's largest workforce. Capturing the peculiarities, continuities, and changes in the PRC's institutional structure, Fei-Ling Wang examines the segmented nature of China's labor force today. He points to the rare coexistence of four "labor allocation patterns:" the traditional family-based system, authoritarian state allocation, community-based labor markets, and the emerging national labor market. China's enduringly stable yet backward institutional structure was based firmly on a mix of family and state institutions; now the addition of market forces highlights the PRC's transitional state. Bolstered with rich case-study detail and Chinese source material, this study argues that the development of labor allocation patterns will profoundly influence China's political and economic development in the coming century.

Author Biography: Fei-Ling Wang is assistant professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, Georgia Institute of Technology.

Booknews

Explores and explains institutional structures and changes in contemporary China through an investigation of the history, current forms, and new developments of Chinese labor allocation patterns (LAPs). The bulk of the study constitutes historical and statistical analyses supported by information collected from field studies carried out from 1989 to 1996. The main finding of the study is that, since the mid-1980s, the centuries old family-based traditional LAP is slowly being replaced by an authoritarian state LAP, community-based labor markets, and a national labor market. The developments of each of the above four LAPs are explored in separate chapters and future trends are discussed. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Latinos in a Changing US Economy: Comparative Perspectives on Growing Inequality, Vol. 7

Author: Rebecca Morales

The 1980s were not good economic times for Latinos in the United States. The contributors to Latinos in a Changing U.S. Economy examine the cause of this phenomenon and the long-term consequences for the Hispanic population. How much, they wonder, can be attributed to racism, to structural barriers, to the demographics of the Latino population, or to the structure of the new global economy? Is there evidence of a persistent and growing inequality in the socioeconomic position of Latinos? Using both national data and a series of case studies from cities with significant Latino populations such as New York, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Chicago, and Miami, the editors identify the widening gap in income and social status between rich and poor, Anglos and Latinos, men and women, and immigrants and native born. These celebrated scholars also document the importance of including Latino populations in the study of--and policies for--improving urban areas. They suggest policy options that will reverse the growing social inequality. As an overview of the current socioeconomic status of Latinos in the United States, this book will be useful for scholars and students in urban studies, Latino studies, economics and society, stratification, and ethnic relations. "This is the most useful volume available on Latinos in the 1980's. . . . Individual articles are, in fact, so well blended that they could easily have been written by a single author. This collection is highly recommended to the general public, policy makers, students, and academics. Excellent references and footnotes." --Choice "The book makes three major contributions. First, it gives us the historical background. . . . Second, theessays provide the reader with a thorough understanding of the different experiences of various Latino subpopulations. . . . Third, they underscore the critical role of immigration and policies toward immigrants in the restructuring process." --Contemporary Sociology "At last! Latinos in a Changing U.S. Economy offers the most comprehensive appraisal of the challenges faced by the second largest minority in the United States. The collection of lucidly written articles, mostly by Latino scholars, reexamines the past in light of present transformations and pinpoints trends likely to characterize the future. A must for scholars and policy thinkers who would like to enrich their understanding for the highly diverse Latino population." --M. Patricia Fernández Kelly, The Johns Hopkins University "Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans; migrants and immigrants; Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Antonio, Miami: these diverse ethnicities, statuses, and urban bases reflect the changing faces of Latinos in the U.S. in the last decade of the 20th century. In this volume, Frank Bonilla, the dean of Latino Studies in the U.S., leads a corp of distinguished, mostly Latino, scholars to explore the effect of recent structural changes on Latinos, soon to be America's largest minority group. Of particular concern to the authors are patterns of persistent and growing poverty and inequality among most Latinos. Familiar issues, such as market forces, racial and ethnic barriers, education and other 'human capital' factors, are re-examined from new angles, with new data, and most importantly, from regional (urban) perspectives, while new issues, such as Latinos and environmental justice, are also introduced. "The new Clinton Administration would do well to study these essays to gain a better understanding of Latinos, as it formulates new policies to address America's most urgent domestic problems, such as the stagnant economy, urban decay, deteriorating race relations, and growing inequality between whites and peoples of color." --Evelyn Hu-DeHart, Professor and Director, Center for Studies of Ethnicity and Race in America, University of Colorado at Boulder "This book is a landmark contribution. It fills a void in our understanding of the place of Latinos in U.S. society. . . . The combining of historical narrative, dynamic conceptualization of measured wage discrimination, studies of Latino communities of place by resident scholars--Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, San Antonio--provides a breadth and wealth of comparative insight which sets the standard for future researchers." --William K. Tabb, CUNY Graduate Center "College-level collections specializing in Latino issues will want to add this to their collections: It provides a strong social and political overview of Latinos and how they are affected by economic change in this country, considering national data and urban case histories to examine gaps in income and status between whites and Latinos." --The Bookwatch

Managed Care Services or Resource Assessment in Forested Landscapes

Managed Care Services: Policy, Programs, and Research

Author: Nancy W W Veeder

Managed Care Services explores the complexities of managed health and behavioral health care systems in relation to policy, program, and research issues. It focuses on the dramatic consequences of the transformation of health care delivery from an essential social good to a commodity totally dependent on the marketplace. The book begins with a foreword by James J. Callahan Jr., a leading authority in the field, and includes an interdisciplinary group of authors who address multiple fields of practice. A common theme throughout the book is the inadequacy of service for such high-risk groups as children, the elderly, the mentally ill, the disabled, the chronically ill, substance abusers, and minorities of color. These at-risk groups include, but are not limited to, the vast numbers of un- and underinsured people in the United States. Specific topics covered in the book include cost of access to care; parity of behavioral health care services reimbursement; health services utilization patterns; education of health care professionals and professional autonomy; care management; and ethical issues arising from the structure of managed care administrative and organizational systems. The importance of research, especially program outcome assessments, is also emphasized. Managed Care Services provide a broad overview of "macro" managed care issues and is an invaluable resource for students and professionals interested in the intersection of social work and health care.

Globalizing Political Economy or Survey of Accounting

Globalizing Political Economy

Author: Nicola Phillips

Despite its claims to global scope and relevance, International Political Economy as a field of study remains entrenched in a narrow set of theoretical, conceptual and empirical foundations derived from the experiences of the advanced industrialized democracies. Bringing together specially commissioned chapters by leading authorities in each key area of debate, Globalizing Political Economy provides a systematic examination and critique of contemporary IPE, and puts forward a new agenda for a truly "global" political economy.

The Legal Environment of Business

Author: Michael B Bixby

Our new text, The Legal Environment of Business, emphasizes students acquiring practical knowledge, not just memorizing concepts never to be used again. Our goal is to provide a book that students and professors will enjoy reading — a book that shows the relevancy of the law to current and future businesspeople.

  • In Consultation

The book contains ten scenarios based on contemporary legal issues in business, featuring detailed conversations between a manager and the firm's lawyer about the legal problem the business is facing.
  • A Memo From Your Lawyer

Several times in each chapter the authors give practical advice directly to the students concerning a legal issue examined in the chapter.
  • Practical Exercises

Each chapter concludes with a situation that calls for students to prepare a written memo in response, using legal terms and concepts explained in the chapter.
  • Social/Ethical Issues

Every chapter contains boxes asking the students to critically analyze the ethical, social, and public policy implications of certain legal principles and issues discussed in the chapter.
  • Excerpted Cases

Three or four court cases are excerpted in each chapter that deal with relevant legal issues. These cases have been carefully edited to remove previously undefined legal terminology.

Booknews

In the 22 chapters, the authors discuss the global, legal, regulatory, political, and social environment of business; legal issues in business organizations; common law subjects and their contemporary dimensions; legal issues involving consumers, competitors, and suppliers; legal rights of consumers, debtors, and creditors; and employer/employee legal issues. Each chapter contains three or four court cases that deal with relevant issues. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
